The blood-vomiting game (Japanese: 吐血の一局, toketsu no ikkyoku) is a famous game of Go of the Edo period of Japan, played on June 27, 1835, between Hon'inbō Jōwa (white) and Akaboshi Intetsu (black). It is noted for the three ghost moves that were allegedly given to Jōwa during the game by ghosts, and for the premature death of the go prodigy Akaboshi Intetsu who died soon after coughing up blood onto the board after the game. Selected moves of the game are shown in diagrams.

After continually struggling to gain the post of Meijin, Hon'inbō Jōwa had won the title over rival Inoue Gennan Inseki. The rivalry between Jōwa and Inseki began when a game scheduled between the two was cancelled. The game, scheduled for February 18, 1828, was to be played due to Inseki's recent promotion to 8 dan. The game was cancelled by Jōwa's side, who claimed that Inseki did not deserve his promotion but had gained it through intrigue. This led Inseki to attempt to remove Jōwa from his post. Failing to keep to an agreement, Jōwa refused to give up his post to Inseki after 6 years (1834). Inseki then sent his pupil, Akaboshi Intetsu, expected to become Meijin after Jōwa,[1] to play Jōwa in a match. The match lasted for four days without any adjournments. Jōwa won the match, and while kneeling over the board Akaboshi coughed or vomited up blood. He died within a few months. As Akaboshi was only 25 years old at the time, it is often suggested that pre-existing gastrointestinal bleeding or pulmonary disease had weakened his health, and it is possible that Akaboshi was sick for months with these diseases already.

Honinbo Jowa (本因坊丈和, original name Todani Matsunosuke, 1787–1847) served as 12th Hon'inbō from 1827 and Meijin Godokoro from 1831 until 1839, when he was forced into retirement.
Jōwa was born in Nagano, Japan, in 1787. It was said that Jōwa had great strength without equal. Historically he was accorded the title "latter sage" to match Dōsaku who was known as the "former sage". At some point in the Meiji Era this title was transferred to the more popular Shūsaku, as word was spread that Jōwa used the contacts that Hayashi Genbi had within the government to help him attain the Meijin Godokoro position. However, even without playing a sogo, Jōwa's strength was still apparent.

Akaboshi Intetsu (赤星 因徹, 1810 - October 19, 1835) was a Japanese professional 7 dan Go player.
Born 1810, Akaboshi rose to prominence as a student of Inoue Genan Inseki, head of the House of Inoue. By 1834, the former had attained the rank of 7 dan.
Genan desired the prestigious position of the Meijin godokoro, but was unsuccessful as a result of political manoeuvres by Honinbo Jowa. Instead, the title and office were obtained by Jowa with the aid of Hayashi Gembi, an ally within the government. In response, Genan sought to use Akaboshi, his prodigy, in an attempt to embarrass Jowa into retirement.

Blood-vomiting game

The Blood Vomiting Game (as it is most widely known - see below) is one of the most famous games of the Edo period. It started on August 13th, 1835 and ended August 21st. White is Honinbo Jowa 9-dan, the Meijin Godokoro. Black is Akaboshi Intetsu 7-dan, the pupil of Gennan Inseki 8-dan, 11th head of the Inoue-house. At the time, Jowa had been Godokoro for about 6 years. This game was part of many intrigues about the post.

The whole issue started years before: already on Feb. 16, 1828 a game between Genan Inseki and Jowa was scheduled by Senchi. Genan Inseki had just been promoted to 8-dan too; not on grounds of merit by winning games but due to these intrigues. This game was cancelled in a heated discussion among the heads of Go houses and other players.

Later, when Jowa did not live up to his secret agreement with Inseki - to turn over the post of Godokoro after 6 years (around 1834), Inseki thought of other means to force Jowa from the post. Intetsu sacrificed himself, metaphorically and in true sense, for his master. Despite his sickness he tried his utmost to win, so that Genan would have a valid objection against Jowa's claim for Godokoro and spoil his ambitions. Then Genan Inseki could apply himself for the post, because the 8th head of the Yasui house, Senchi was already 59 years old in 1835.

This game is the result of these intrigues.

This is a re-enaction of the classical "Blood vomiting game", played 1835 between:
Black: Akaboshi Intetsu (7 dan, pupil of Gennan Inseki 8 dan)
White: Honinbo Jowa (9 dan)

Even though this movie mostly tries to imitate cool, Hikaru no go-inspired go playing, it also means to give a brief game analysis and some interesting facts revolving the game. This means, that even if a little over-dramatized, all that happens in the movie actually did happen in reality.

In the movie black... "resigns" after the 3rd ghost move, but the actual game result was W+R after 247 moves.
