The goal is to compare gaming PC cases for best CPU or GPU temperatures, best noise-normalized temperatures (or acoustic performance), and best build quality at each price class for 2020 so far. This includes cases that have come out in previous years, so our criteria was centered around cases available right now rather than only things that have launched recently, since it's not like cases age on the shelves. We'll run another piece on the best and worst cases toward end of year, and that'll be a wider-scope look at computer cases for different categories. In this one, we're talking about budget cases, mid-range cases, and high-end cases, which we've split into ~$60 to ~$80 cases, sub-$100 enclosures, and cases north of that. Best Case of 2021 So Far: Fractal Torrent Case Review & BenchmarksFractal’s Torrent PC case is brand new and already ranks one of the best we’ve ever reviewed, while also offering unique, well-designed features. Our review is overall positive. UPDATE: Fractal Torrent Fan Hub issue - youtube.com/watch?v=ytxtbLou978 Fractal's Torrent case is among the best tower cases we've reviewed anytime recently, competing most directly with the Corsair 7000D, Fractal's own Meshify 2 XL, the Phanteks Enthoo Pro 2, the P500A, and maybe Cooler Master's H500 series. The Torrent most closely resembles the old Silverstone Raven RV-02, which is one of our favorite cases of all time. The Torrent does well to follow this up, and is most unique for its huge 180mm fans and full accompaniment of 140mm fans. We're hoping to do a PC build in the Fractal Torrent sometime soon as well, since we actually like it enough to use for a production build for GN. (Yes, a bunch of writers do in fact know what the English word "Torrent" means. We were joking about the file references.) Impressive Quality: Hyte Y60 Case Review & Benchmarks vs. O11 DynamicThis is one of the most unique cases we've reviewed in a while. The Hyte Y60 is of high build quality, but also missteps in several key ways. Still, the Y60 does new things in the case market. Hyte is owned by iBUYPOWER, but the difference is that the Hyte team is actually making things that -- thus far -- don't fall apart if they're looked at wrong. Hyte has to establish itself on its own brand credibility and it started with the Revolt 3. Now, Hyte is selling the Y60 ATX case for water cooling builds (although air cooling builds can also work here). There are several potential pitfalls or shortcomings in the case for specific builds, but as long as you choose the right parts to synergize with it and build in the correct order, the Hyte Y60 makes for an interesting and unique case. Build quality was overall excellent, with shortcomings mostly in filters, airflow, and build order (or ease of installation). Even with those negatives, the Y60 is one of the best ATX cases we've reviewed lately. We reviewed the Lian Li O11D Evo here: youtube.com/watch?v=o0wecnSTdy4 Coasters are IN STOCK & SHIPPING now! NZXT H7 Flow & Elite Case Review: Thermals, Cable Management, & NoiseNZXT just launched its new H7 Flow and H7 Elite cases, ranging from $130 to $200. The H7 Flow is one of the best cases we've looked at in a while, although the Elite misses a step. In this review, we're benchmarking the new NZXT H7 Flow and H7 Elite versus some of the other top cases for gaming PCs, including the Phanteks P400A, Fractal Meshify 2 Compact, and Corsair 4000D Airflow. These benchmarks will help you find the best gaming PC cases in 2022 in two main price brackets: For the Flow, it's about $130, and for the Elite, the bracket is $200. That puts the H7 Elite vs. the Fractal Torrent (and other top cases right now), so it's in a fierce price bracket. 12 Fans, 0 Airflow: One of the Worst Cases We've Reviewed | Abkoncore Ramesses 780This case includes 12 case fans stock, but the case is like a black hole for airflow. We're reviewing the Abkoncore Ramesses 780, which is one of the worst-designed cases we've reviewed. Article review of this case: gamersnexus.net/hwreviews/3612-abkoncore-ramesses-780-case-review-really-bad The GN Wireframe Mouse Mats are back in stock & shipping now! Any orders or back-orders we have are shipping daily as we catch up on the huge interest and order volume. Grab one here: store.gamersnexus.net/products/gn-wireframe-mouse-mat (we are also donating 10% of store revenue to Eden Reforestation Projects through August 20!) The Abkoncore Ramesses 780 (R780) is a massive full-tower case that's outfitted with 12 fans stock, but most of them blow into walls. We're completely baffled by how anyone could actually design this intentionally, then still brag about how great the airflow and cooling is. This case, despite being large, is so inefficiently laid-out that its actual usable space is comparable to much smaller enclosures, so it doesn't even win in the "just be large" department. The fans were even custom-designed to mount in the bottom while showing the LEDs clearly, but they still can't overcome the panel limitations for air access. Fractal Torrent Compact Case Review: Just One ProblemThis review of the Fractal Torrent Compact case, following up the normal ATX full-tower and accompanying the Torrent Nano, benchmarks performance in some of the best cases so far. The Fractal Torrent Compact is a smaller follow-up to the Fractal Torrent that was highly-received in our previous testing and benchmarking. We had remarked that the Torrent was the best case of 2021, including best airflow, and we were impressed with Fractal's design, its deviation from its comfort zone, and its handling of a potential crisis. The Torrent Compact is up now. Overall, it revives many of the things we liked about the Torrent, but it has one key problem caused by its smaller size: Cable Management, and for some, it could be a deal-breaker. Otherwise, the case does many of the same things well as before. Best Case 2020: Yeston Cute Pet Case Review & Micro-ATX BuildWe finally got the Yeston Cute Pet case from China for review. This is Yeston's pink-and-silver cat-themed computer case, sized for micro-ATX or mini-ITX builds. The "Best Case of 2020" title is obviously not serious. Snowflake helped us review the Yeston Cute Pet case, accompanying its Cute Pet video card, the ID Cooling Pinkflow cooler, and the RX 5700 XT Waifu (also by Yeston). In this review, we're looking at build quality, material quality, visuals, ease-of-installation features, and value for the Yeston Cute Pet case. This case was difficult to get with human malware, Lunar New Year, and our own ignorance of the processes of Taobao, but we did finally get one from Blue Gem in the US. NZXT Didn't Want to Send the H510 Flow: Case Re-Re-RefreshNZXT has re-re-refreshed its H500 case as an H510, then an H510 Elite, and now an H510 Flow, which, by some miracle, is presumably selling for $110. Test: Same Fans in Every Case & Noise Normalized Case ThermalsWe're updating our case testing methodology to include standardized fan benchmarks and noise-normalized thermals. Today, we're unveiling that method! Article: gamersnexus.net/guides/3477-case-fan-standardization-tests-noise-normalized-thermals Our viewers have been requesting that we test the same fans in every case, thus standardizing them, and so we finally decided to do that. We have some reservations about this testing approach, described in great detail in the video, but it also offers some unique insights. There are definitely positives and negatives to the topic, and we hope that our explanation helps highlight those in detail. Further, we've tested with a noise-normalized configuration for case thermals. This one is more universally applicable, as we use the stock case fan configuration and set the fan RPM (split evenly across all case fans, leaving CPU and GPU fans alone) to reach a noise level of ~36dBA. Once achieved, we run thermal tests to see which case performs best under equal noise conditions. Full detail on the case testing methods can be found in both the video and the article, linked above.
