Board games, as their name implies, often have a board. Oftentimes, one has to move around on said board. Sometimes, the board is made up of fancy shapes and stuff. One of said types of shapes is the humble hexagon, with its six sides. Lots of games use it, most often wargames. Here are my personal favorites, though! Enjoy!

It's an interesting thing, thinking about the composition and structure of the actual board part of board games. In this case, checking out ones that use hexagonal tiles for purposes of mapping, movement, etc. While a lot of games lean towards squares, hexes tend to be more for war/skirmish games and the like, and in general simply offer more variety compared to some others in terms of strategy. Or maybe I'm reading too much into a shape.

RULES:
Layout the board and arrange the pieces like so, with 1 extra pawns and 1 extra bishop for each side. Make sure the Kings line up across from each other.

A Rook can move any number of spaces in a straight line from any adjacent space. You are not allowed to castle.

The bishop can move diagonally along the apex lines any number of spaces. Diagonal movement is used by following the line from an apex of the pieces current space to the next space.

The queen combines the moves of the rook and bishop.

Kings may move to any adjacent space or 1 diagonal space.

The knight moves the same along adjacent spaces.

The pawn moves forward only and captures to the top adjacent spaces. A pawn may not capture diagonally.

Pawns still have the initial two-step move option, however, if one of your pawns, captures a piece and occupies a friendly Pawn's starting square, it regains its initial two-step move option. En passant captures are still allowed and Pawns promote when they arrive on one of the eleven opposite most hexes of the board.

The Board Game Sanctuary is a family friendly board game channel that aims to introduce the board gaming hobby to new and seasoned players in a light, fun and humourous way.

Most of this video is about how to construct a game-board for playing Hexagonal Iso-Path. The final five minutes explain how to play.

Alternatives and similarities-
The first rule-set for this game was created by pocket83 in March, 2017. Those rules apply specifically to a 37-space hexagonal game board which uses eight game pieces (and two players). They are subject to revision and addition. As such cases arise, this description (and the associated links to the rule sheets) will be amended to accommodate them.

This game could also be played on an h5 (61-space) board, or it could be played with additional pieces. I shouldn't have to tell you that such changes add vastly to the complexity of the game, and as such, the version presented here was best suited for an introduction to game-play. This standard version of the game has 22% of the board covered by pieces, which is a comfortable balance between player freedom and large-space tedium. Additional pieces may give variety for experienced players, but we've found that eight pieces per player feels extremely limiting, so no more than six pieces is recommended for an h4 board. There is also a three-player aspect to this game, but it's complicated, so read more about it in the rule-sheet links.

Mrs. pocket would like to add that a set of marble hexagon tiles would be ideal. That might sound extravagant, but hexagon-tile mosaics are available online and at most home centers in travertine, granite, glass, marble, and more. Since the game only requires 37 tiles to play, that amount can usually be found within a single, one square-foot tile mesh. That translates to only around 10 or 15$. I would have liked to mention that in the video, but it was getting too long, and I don't really need another game board!

There are, of course, many hexagonal board games to be found throughout history, but Hexagonal Iso-Path is being presented to you in this form as a standardized, original creation for the exclusive purpose of having a fun and simple strategic capture game. No promises, but I've personally designed this game to be what I want to play in a zero-sum board game. However, any similarities to anything that may already exist is purely coincidental. If (and as) other related games reveal themselves to me, I will post mentions of them here to give credit where it is due. At present, I have no knowledge of the existence of the game design presented here. That said, I like to imagine that some distant years ago, maybe in some quiet and isolated grass-roofed village, there were perhaps already experienced players of this simple-yet-intriguing game. They could have fashioned ornate pieces from light-colored stone. They played in the warm, sun dried dirt of the era that was without time's pressuring imposition; that place before the complexity brought on by our modern fixation with the abstract. To them, I pay homage by admitting that idea ownership is a fool's personal overstatement. Property, intellectual or otherwise, is transient and insubstantial. Either case, mine or theirs, I truly love this game, and I hope that you will too. Please enjoy.

RULES:

The object of the game is to be the first player to connect their two opposite sides of the board together with markers. Setup. Layout the gameboard and give each player a supply of colored markers. Check out the link in the description for where you can print one off. Go game pieces are commonly used as the markers. One player is trying to connect the top and bottom of the board while the other is trying to connect the left and right. Pick a player to go first, then turns alternate.

On your turn, you place 1 stone on any single empty space on the board, then your opponent takes a turn. Once a stone has been placed on the board, it may not be moved, except during the 2nd turn of the game. Only on the 2nd turn of the game, after the first stone has been placed, your opponent may choose to use their turn to replace your stone with theirs. This may only happen once and is designed to help mitigate the advantage of going first.

Once one player has a series of adjacent stones that connect their two sides of the board together, they win. The connection does not have to be the most efficient. If all the spaces are used and there is no winner then the result is a tie.

Any time you’re feeling creatively uninspired or lamenting that you just don’t have a big enough budget to create something extraordinary, remember what Pauline Capote accomplished with a home inkjet printer, some paper, and a sharp designer’s eye. Challenged by her Packaging class at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco to come up with a board game aimed at designers, Pauline created one right after our own CMYK hearts – “Hex: The Clash of Colors.”

From your very first glimpse of the box you realize this isn’t your average Milton Bradley amusement – its distinctive hexagonal shape isn’t just eye-catching, it’s completely in keeping with the focus of the game: color. It was designed that way “as a nod to the HEX color wheel where every color has a value number,” Pauline explains.

The telescoping lid of the set-up box features a logotype at its center that cleverly brings to mind the double-helix of DNA, and hence the building-block nature of color itself. Radiating out from that: the names of hundreds upon hundreds of colors are printed in minute lettering on the front, with hundreds more along the sides of the lid. Along the edges we find gradations of the color gamut, reminding us again of the color wheel. Even more color greets you along the sides of the bottom part of the box.

Inside you find the centerpiece of the game – the board – faithfully recreating the color wheel while still managing to include subtle artist differences. The use of shading to simulate depth, in particular, is extremely effective at introducing a third dimension to a traditionally two-dimensional object.

Beneath the game board we find six metal game pieces, each a different color; colorful game cards; and a hexagonal tower that holds the cards during gameplay.

And how DOES one play, you ask? Each game card contains a color-themed question, such as “In the ‘Peanuts’ cartoon and comics, what color is Woodstock?” (We won’t keep you in suspense: it’s yellow.)

“Correct answers allow the players to advance, similar to Chinese Checkers,” Pauline explains. “‘Hex’ is a game that allows designers to compete with each other based on strategy and general design knowledge. It has a focus on minimalism and puts the attention on the colors of the spectrum.”

Though technically accurate, “minimalism” feels like such a strange word to apply to this game. The precision-of-detail it contains makes the project as a whole feel far richer than the sum of its parts.

In fact, the only truly minimal detail concerning “Hex” are the resources that went into its making.

“The whole project was made almost entirely out of Red River Paper’s 75 lb. Arctic Polar Luster Paper,” Pauline tells us. “The base that held it together was constructed out of Canson Art Board. As a student on a budget, I printed everything on my at-home ink jet printer, a Canon Pixma Pro 9000 Mark II.” Everything was cut by hand using an X-Acto knife and wrapped around the base board using double-sided tape; the game pieces were coated in spray paint.

As you can imagine, all of this means that there is exactly ONE copy of “Hex” in existence. A big “thank you” to Pauline for entrusting us with it long enough to share it with you...and play a few games here in PaperSpecs Towers in between deadlines ;-)
